Berkey vs. Reverse Osmosis: The Waste, the Watts, and the Minerals
The Matchup
Reverse osmosis is the standard other systems get measured against - pressurized membranes that reject nearly everything dissolved in water. It's powerful, well understood, and genuinely the right tool for some water problems.
But for typical household drinking water, RO's costs - in water, power, and minerals - are worth counting before assuming it's the gold standard. We did the math.
The Key Differences
- Waste water: Classic RO sends 2-4 gallons to the drain for every gallon produced. Gravity filtration has no reject stream at all.
- Power & installation: Under-sink RO needs plumbing, a drain connection, and in many systems a powered pump. A Berkey needs a counter.
- The mineral problem: RO strips calcium and magnesium along with contaminants - hence the aftermarket for remineralizing cartridges. Berkey filters selectively and keeps minerals naturally.
- PFAS, the modern test: Phoenix media is formulated to adsorb 'forever chemicals' while keeping your minerals - RO strips PFAS along with everything else, and bills you in wastewater.
- Cost: An installed RO system runs $150-500+, with ongoing membrane and cartridge costs. Berkey's ~2 cents per gallon with elements that last years typically undercuts it over any multi-year window.
- Where RO genuinely wins: Very high dissolved solids - saline or heavily mineralized water - where stripping everything is the goal. Start with a water test; it's the honest way to choose.
The Numbers, Side by Side
| Compare | Berkey (Berkey Phoenix Elements) | Reverse Osmosis |
|---|---|---|
| Waste water | None | 2-4 gal per gallon made |
| Power | None | Required (pump systems) or line pressure |
| Installation | None | Plumbing + drain connection |
| Healthy minerals | Retained | Removed (remineralizers extra) |
| PFAS | Formulated for PFAS; minerals kept | Effective but wasteful & costly |
| Cost per gallon | ~2¢ | Higher incl. waste & maintenance |
Which One Is Right for You?
Berkey is the better pick if... Berkey is the better pick for typical municipal or well water where the target is contaminants, not total dissolved solids - and for anyone who values not wasting water.
Reverse Osmosis makes sense if... RO makes sense when a water test shows very high dissolved solids - and we recommend that test, not a guess, before choosing either system.
Questions People Ask
Isn't RO the most thorough filtration there is?
For removing dissolved solids, yes - nearly everything, including minerals. 'Thorough' and 'ideal for drinking water' aren't the same thing: your body doesn't need empty water, and the EPA doesn't recommend demineralized water for regular use.
How much water does RO actually waste?
Legacy systems: 2-4 gallons per gallon made. High-efficiency models improve on that but never reach zero - gravity has no reject stream at all.
When would you tell someone to buy RO?
Honest answer: saline or very hard well water, or specific dissolved-solid problems a test confirms. If your test shows ordinary contaminant concerns, gravity does the job for less.
